Start With the Symptom. Look Beyond the Symptom.
Acupuncture and whole-person treatment for people experiencing stress, tension and recurring physical symptoms.
Why people first come
Most people first come to see me because something is wrong and, despite trying lots of different treatments, nothing is helping.
- A migraine that keeps returning.
- Persistent tension through the neck, shoulders or jaw.
- Digestive problems such as IBS.
- Anxiety or a feeling of being constantly on edge.
- Stress that is becoming increasingly difficult to switch off.
- Fatigue that does not seem to resolve simply by resting.
The symptom matters. But after more than ten years in clinical practice, I have become increasingly interested in another question:
What else might be happening within the person experiencing the symptom?
More Than Ten Years of Clinical Experience
I have spent more than a decade working as an acupuncturist, supporting people with a wide range of physical and emotional concerns.
That clinical experience remains at the heart of the way I work. But it has also taught me something important.
The place where somebody experiences their symptoms is not always the whole story.
Two people can arrive with apparently similar symptoms and have very different patterns underneath them.
That is why my approach looks beyond simply “Where does it hurt?”
I am also interested in what your system has been experiencing, adapting to and carrying.
When Emotional suffering becomes Embodied
Emotions are powerful influences on our physical well-being; they are not simply something that happens in the mind. It has a physical manifestation.
- Breathing changes.
- Muscles tighten.
- Digestion can alter.
- Sleep may become disturbed.
- The mind becomes more active.
- We may become restless, anxious, irritable or exhausted.
- And sometimes the body seems unable to fully switch off again.
For one person, this may be connected with fear or uncertainty.
For another, frustration, anger or resentment.
For another, relentless thinking, responsibility or pressure.
For somebody else, it may involve old experiences, learnt ways of coping, difficulty expressing what they feel or the persistent sense that something is not quite right.
This does not mean that every physical symptom is caused by an emotion or by stress.
Physical symptoms are real and can have many different causes.
But when stress, emotional responses and long-established patterns are part of the picture, it can be valuable to work with those layers as well as the symptom itself.
Treating the Person, Not Just the Condition
Traditional Chinese Medicine has always interested me because it does not completely separate physical health from our emotional and energetic experience.
So although we may begin with the condition that brought you through the door, my treatment considers the wider pattern.
- Where are you tense?
- Where are you depleted?
- Where does your system seem unable to settle?
- What continually activates you?
- What makes your symptoms worse?
- How easily can you move from activity into rest?
- And what does your body appear to be communicating?
- What does my intuition help understand about what needs to be worked on?
- What is at the heart of the matter?
Acupuncture provides us with a practical starting point.
Treatment may be used to support physical symptoms, help the system settle and work with patterns of tension, depletion or imbalance.
Alongside this, where appropriate, I may introduce simple breath, awareness or body-based practices to help you notice what is happening within yourself.
The aim is not to analyse everything. It is to begin becoming more aware of the relationship between body, mind, emotion and the way you experience life.
You May Come Because of…
- migraines or recurring headaches
- neck, shoulder or muscular tension
- digestive problems such as IBS
- anxiety or persistent internal tension
- stress and overwhelm
- frustration, irritability or an inability to switch off
- fatigue or feeling depleted
We begin with what is happening now. There is no assumption that your symptoms have a hidden psychological meaning and no requirement to undertake deeper emotional work. Sometimes straightforward acupuncture treatment is exactly what is needed.
At other times, as the physical system begins to settle, a wider pattern becomes easier to see.
From Symptom Relief to Understanding the Pattern
This is where my work has evolved.
My primary aim is to address your presenting issue first, to help you feel better and give you hope that you can get better.
Alongside this, I am interested in what happens when we become curious about the pattern beneath the recurring experience.
- Why does your body tighten when it does?
- What situations repeatedly activate your nervous system?
- What emotions are difficult to express?
- What are you continually carrying?
For some people, treatment remains primarily acupuncture based.
For others, these questions become the beginning of something deeper.
When the Work Wants to Go Deeper
Sometimes a physical symptom opens a door.
As treatment progresses, you may begin noticing patterns in yourself that you would like to understand more fully.
Perhaps you recognise that certain emotions repeatedly trigger tension.
Perhaps an old experience still feels present in the body.
Perhaps you can see a pattern intellectually but cannot seem to change it.
Or perhaps, once the immediate symptoms have settled, a different question emerges:
What would it feel like to live differently?
This is where my Embodied Wisdom Journey begins.
The Embodied Wisdom Journey is a structured six-week, one-to-one process that moves beyond treatment of an individual symptom and into deeper exploration of the body, nervous system, emotions, beliefs, patterns and inner knowing.
You do not have to decide at the beginning that this is where you are heading.
For many people, the journey begins much more simply: “Something does not feel right in my body, and I would like some help.”
Explore the Embodied Wisdom JourneyWhere Do We Start?
We start with you.
Not with a programme. Not with an assumption about why you have a particular symptom. And not with the idea that everything needs to be explored.
We begin with what has brought you here.
I will listen to what you have been experiencing, consider your health and wider circumstances, and explain how I might approach treatment.
From there, we can decide together what feels appropriate.
That might simply be acupuncture.
It might gradually include more awareness of stress, emotion and embodied patterns.
And for some people it may eventually become a deeper journey of personal exploration.
The first step is a conversation.
Tell me what has been happening. We can take it from there.
